1. DirectAccess
DirectAccess provides seamless connectivity without requiring a traditional VPN. It uses IPsec encryption and IPv6 tunneling over IPv4 to ensure secure access to internal resources.
2. RRAS
Routing and Remote Access Service combines VPN and dial-up capabilities, enabling secure site-to-site connections and routing between subnets.
3. Web Application Proxy
Acts as a Reverse Proxy, enabling secure access to internal web applications from external networks. Integrated with AD FS, it ensures only authorized users gain access.
4. Remote Assistance
Allows IT support staff to view and control a user’s desktop remotely. The invitee maintains control, ensuring security and comfort during troubleshooting.
5. RSAT
Remote Server Administration Tools enable administrators to manage roles and features across servers remotely. RSAT supports both graphical and command-line interfaces and is compatible with Windows 10 and 11 clients.
6. RDS
Remote Desktop Services provide access to graphical interfaces and applications remotely. More than two concurrent sessions require RDS CALs and a licensing server.
7. RDG
Remote Desktop Gateway secures remote desktop connections by acting as an intermediary between clients and internal resources. It integrates with NPS for conditional access policies.
8. VPN
VPN creates secure tunnels for data transmission. Two main types:
- Remote-Access VPN: Secure connections for telecommuters to corporate networks.
- Site-to-Site VPN: Connects entire networks across different locations.
9. App-V
Application Virtualization allows applications to run virtually without local installation. It reduces conflicts and enhances scalability, especially in cloud-based environments.
10. Managing Ports
Ports are critical for remote access. For example, RDS uses port 3389, with additional ports (3390+) for multiple sessions. IP Sockets combine IP addresses and port numbers to establish unique communication channels.
11. File and Print Services
Includes File Sharing, Work Folders, DFS Namespaces, and BranchCache. The PDS role centralizes print and document services, supporting features like Internet Printing and LPD for cross-platform compatibility.
Conclusion
Remote Access roles in Windows Server 2025 provide a comprehensive suite of technologies for secure connectivity and resource management. Combining DirectAccess, VPN, RDS, and RDG ensures organizations achieve both productivity and security in remote work environments.
