1. Deploying with the MDT
MDT automates and streamlines installations, particularly useful for deploying multiple servers consistently. It uses answer files (XML) to provide unattended responses during setup. Tools like Windows ADK, Windows PE, and Windows SIM support this process.
Steps for MDT Deployment:
- Install
Windows ADKandWindows PEon a Windows 11 computer. - Install
MDTand run Deployment Workbench. - Create a new deployment share and import Windows Server 2025 files.
- Create a task sequence and answer file for unattended installation.
- Update the deployment share to generate a bootable
LiteTouchPE_x64image. - Boot the target server with the PE image and run the Deployment Wizard.
- Provide credentials, select the task sequence, and configure locale, time, and BitLocker options.
- MDT completes the deployment automatically.
2. In-place Upgrade
An in-place upgrade updates an existing installation to Windows Server 2025 while retaining user settings, applications, and data. Supported upgrades include Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, and 2022.
Steps for In-place Upgrade:
- Insert the Windows Server 2025 installation media and run setup.
- Select the edition to install and accept license terms.
- Choose what to keep (files, apps, settings).
- Ensure sufficient disk space and click
Install. - Allow the upgrade to complete after several restarts.
- Confirm successful upgrade in system properties.
3. Migration with WSMT
Migration transfers roles, features, applications, and services from older servers to Windows Server 2025. The Windows Server Migration Tool (WSMT) and PowerShell cmdlets facilitate this process.
Example: Migrating DHCP Server
- On the old server (Windows Server 2012 R2), export DHCP data:
Export-DhcpServer -File C:\DHCPdata.xml -Leases -Force -ComputerName OldServer -Verbose - Stop the DHCP service and move the file to a shared folder.
- On the new server (Windows Server 2025), add the DHCP role via Server Manager.
- Copy the
DHCPdata.xmlfile to the new server. - Import the DHCP data:
Import-DhcpServer -File C:\DHCPdata.xml -BackupPath C:\DHCP\ -Leases -ScopeOverwrite -Force -ComputerName NewServer -Verbose - Restart the DHCP service to complete migration.
Conclusion
Deployment with MDT, upgrading in-place, and migrating with WSMT provide comprehensive strategies for installing Windows Server 2025. These methods ensure flexibility, efficiency, and reliability across enterprise environments.
